Everything you need to know about cycling the Barrow Line towpath and Athy lock routes

Barrow Line towpath cycling route

The Barrow Line towpath is mostly smooth, well-maintained gravel and tarmac, making it ideal for cycling at a comfortable pace. You'll find gentle inclines around the lock areas, but nothing steep — the entire route is designed to be accessible without requiring mountain biking skills.

You're welcome to bring your own bike, but we can also arrange comfortable hybrid or electric bikes for you. Electric bikes are great if you'd prefer less pedalling effort — they take the strain out of the lock inclines.

We check the forecast before each ride and can reschedule if heavy rain or high winds are predicted. Light rain doesn't usually stop us — the towpath drains well and the scenery's still beautiful. We'll provide advice on waterproof gear and always have a support vehicle on hand if you need a rest or dry-off.

The Athy lock routes let you see how the canal engineering works — you'll cycle past lock gates, learn about water levels and navigation, and understand why these waterways were built. It's a mix of cycling, history and a bit of canal heritage education. We explain how to navigate safely around the locks and what all the machinery does.

Yes — we have a support vehicle that follows the group, so you can take a break anytime without worrying about getting back. You can ride the full distance, hop in for a rest, or do a shorter loop and meet the group later. It's your pace, your choice.
